Job done!

The race is done and dusted. At the age of 49 and with 8 participations in the Solitaire du Figaro to his name, the skipper of Groupe Bel demonstrated that he still has what it takes to fight it out with younger sailors. Kito claimed 8th place on this final leg between Ireland and the Cotentin Peninsula, finishing at 2326, and 2h10'26'' off the masterly victor Armel Le Cléac'h. The skipper of Brit Air won a third leg when he finished in Cherbourg and won the 2010 Solitaire in outstanding style. His pretender is called François Gabart: a rising star who took second place last November in the Transat Jacques Vabre racing with Kito on the Open 60...

Third at the Fastnet, Groupe Bel is up there

At 01h01'33'' precisely, Gildas Morvan (Cercle Vert) was the first competitor to round the Fastnet lighthouse and hoist his spinnaker, a few seconds ahead of Corentin Douguet (E.Leclerc Mobile) and Kito de Pavant (Groupe Bel). But at the first position report at 0400 this morning, with all 42 boats on the downhill sleighride under spinnaker in a solid 25-30 knot northwesterly wind, guess who had...

Farewell Ireland, Cherbourg calls!

The start gun of the fourth and final leg of the 2010 Solitaire will be fired at 1400 today (Monday), destination Cherbourg. This last leg is 435 miles long, and according to Kito, it's going to be a fast race. The stopover in Kinsale provided plenty of rest for the solo sailors in welcoming and sunny Ireland. As with the rest of the fleet, the skipper of Groupe Bel has been able to recharge his...

Tight finish in Ireland

The fleet has arrived in Ireland. The competitors of the Solitaire du Figaro 2010 reached Kinsale on Wednesday evening at the end of what was a full-on third leg. It was a 349 mile flat out race from the start in Brest with the fleet remaining tightly grouped, eyes riveted to the sails, boat speed and shifts in the wind, which had been particularly unstable since Brest. It wasn't so much about...

Already at the Fastnet, Kinsale tonight

It was set to be a sprint leg, and the first two thirds of the course between Brest and the Celtic Sea were covered at high speed, with no great tactical options available. The fleet remained tightly grouped until last night when competitors engaged in a battle of tacks, in a breeze which has become stable since dawn, and a sea state which is gradually settling down. Spread laterally over 25...
