It was a dream start. From St. Malo to Cap Fréhel, hundreds of spectator boats crowded around the 85 single-handed sailors, who set off for Guadeloupe this Sunday at 13:02.
15 to 20,000 people were present on the water to admire a wonderful spectacle. When the gun sounded, the impressive Groupama 3, skippered by Franck Cammas was first to cross the starting line, with the sharpest of his Ultime Class friends (Gitana 11, Sodebo, Idec). In the IMOCA 60 foot Class, the yachts stayed close-knit from the very start, as announced. Although Arnaud Boissières (Akena Verandas) opened the way on the starting line, Kito de Pavant, Michel Desjoyeaux, Marc Guillemot, Jean-Pierre Dick and Vincent Riou charged off together for the first miles. At the Cap Fréhel buoy, anchored at the bottom of the cliffs, to which boats of all sizes swarmed, Jean-Pierre Dick (Virbac Paprec 3) moved into the lead followed by Michel Desjoyeaux (Foncia) and Kito. They are well and truly off! ?
Kito de Pavant 45 minutes after the start, just before reaching Cap Fréhel:
“This Route du Rhum is magical, it's a wonderful spectacle. Life has its surprises and this is a really beautiful one as far as I’m concerned. The starting gun set me free; I was a little tense before the start. The sea was calm this morning, but now, with all the spectators and accompanying boats, the sea has become very choppy and you need to be vigilant. It was a good start downwind with the mainsails driving us out towards the ocean. There are so many people and its fantastic what’s happening. Thirty minutes before the start, there was some stress with a decision to be made in relation to the choice of sails. We knew that the wind would ease off and Groupe Bel is under full mainsail and gennaker. There are still small gusts and we need to be quick off the mark. And then, there was the saying goodbye to the technical team, which is always an emotional moment. So, here we are, we’ve let the horses run and we’re off for a big adventure. All the IMOCAs are grouped together. I have Michel Desjoyeaux just beside me, Vincent Riou and Marc Guillemot a little further away, so there’s a good battle in view.”
