Nearly a week ago Kito and Seb detected the damage to Groupe Bel's keel. After rounding Cape Horn on Tuesday evening and arriving in Ushuaia on Wednesday, the two sailors and their technical team have been hard at work at the southern tip of Argentina. Once the diagnosis made, only one solution was available to the team: the return of Groupe Bel by cargo ship. With the help of their contacts on-site, the monohull has already been prepared and is at last ready to embark as soon as possible for Europe. During a special radio contact at midday with the Bel factories in Madrid and Ulzama, Kito and Seb received the unfailing support of the Spanish workers. It was a great heartwarming moment after these difficult days. The skipper took advantage of this occasion to review the situation and the best moments of this Barcelona World Race.
"Logistics in Ushuaia are not that simple. We had a weather window on Saturday during which we worked on the boat to remove the mast and keel. It was lovely and sunny in the morning, but the sky clouded over and the snow came! We managed to do this work with the resources available here in Ushuaia. The boat has been taken apart. Groupe Bel is now in three parts: the keel and the mast are on the quay, and the boat at its mooring. This has made it possible to consider solutions for returning the boat by cargo ship. There is one solution that is being envisaged for next week. We are delighted to have been able to finish this work, since it wasn't very easy."
Bel factory in Madrid: What were the best moments of the Barcelona World Race?
"There were a lot of positive things, and I really learned an awful lot about managing a round-the-world. Time management is very important in this type of race. You get to do lots of great things, but we could have done with a little success. It is difficult to remember all the good times. The start was magnificent and the regatta in the Mediterranean was good fun too. In the Atlantic we were a little behind, but we came back into second position. Finally, the main pleasure comes from overcoming difficulties, but you only realize that afterwards." Ulzama Bel factory: What is your physical condition after two months of racing?
"Physically it's very wearing! It is true that we had quite a lot of small hitches, notably my cracked ribs with which I suffered for nearly a month. For the moment we are not really rested yet, because we have a lot of work to do here. I think that we have lost around twelve kilos in two months. On the other hand we've gained in muscle! Before thinking of rest, we must first get Groupe Bel onto a cargo ship. Then we will be able to think of ourselves and try to get back to "normal" life. Visibly happy to be able to talk with the Groupe Bel skipper, the workers of the Spanish factories insisted on congratulating Kito and Seb: "We really wished to encourage Kito and Seb at this difficult time. They sailed a really good race, which we followed from day-to-day. We really congratulate them for everything they have done, their courage and their perseverance."
