Watch out ahead! They have well and truly set off, and in style! Kito de Pavant and Yann Régniau were twitching with impatience at the idea of getting back to racing again. They showed us this, this afternoon. At 15:00, sailing in a twenty knot southeasterly, Groupe Bel was the quickest to set off from the starting line of the Transat Jacques Vabre. Downwind under mainsail with one reef and gennaker, Kito, Yann and their playmates gave us an incredible show. Planing, surfing, Groupe Bel didn't give away an inch. Second at the General Metzinger marker, the duo was still situated among the top three in the 17:00 ranking behind PRB and Virbac-Paprec 3!
What Kito de Pavant had to say before leaving the pontoon:
“We have fairly standard conditions for a start from Le Havre in November. The first 24 hours will not be simple with the passing of the front during the night. There will be strong gusts at 30 knots, on a reach (beam wind). It will be fast and wet. We’ll be thrown in the deep end almost instantly! Things will begin to be played out in the Atlantic. A number of very different routes can be taken by the racers. An interesting southern route for the multihulls and a very northern route which has the advantage of being faster but which is reckless. There will also be the intermediary routes, and ours will surely be one of these.”
“We are highly motivated, and relieved to be back racing. We are going to try to be both efficient and careful this first night. Then things will become clearer, we will head down towards the Azores, where there will be some very important decisions to make for what follows.”
What Yann Régniau had to say three hours before the start:
“The sea is not going to be simple. We are going to have to protect the boat and the equipment and at the same time try to sail fast, and then attack. The first night will be decisive in that it will mean getting to grips with the race immediately. I don’t think we’ll sleep much! This kind of start is a new experience for me. I found it difficult not to leave on Sunday, because in my mind I was ready. So I began to dwell on things. Today, I am really glad to be here, in the starting blocks!”
