The wind has returned and so has the morale on board Groupe Bel. During the night Kito de Pavant and Yann Régniau came out of the high-pressure area in which they had been stuck for 36 hours. They are now enjoying the pleasure of surfing, driven by a slightly stronger breeze than forecast. The two boats up ahead, Virbac-Paprec 3 and Hugo Boss, have a more than 200 mile lead (370 km) on the third, the surprising Bureau Vallée sailed by the Burton brothers. For the others, the great rush to the west has started, with just under 10 days of racing ahead of them. At midday the humor on board the Laughing Cow® yacht was cheerful and the two sailors relaxed. Three CE2-CM1 classes (primary school) from Rabat, Le Havre and Paris talked with the skipper of their favorite boat on the phone.
When there is wind, all is well! Once again the Groupe Bel crew is back on the attack: "We hit the wind again at around three o'clock in the morning and we finally got out of the bubble! We are making headway at between 15 and 18 knots on a direct cause with the wind speed of about 20 knots. It is up to us now to try and close the gap, even if our two friends, on their northern route, will be difficult to catch up on", said Kito on the radio at midday. All the same, the Groupe Bel skipper took advantage of this moment to draw up a small postcard description of the Atlantic Ocean at this halfway mark: "The Trade winds are beginning to set in. It's really sunny with a blue sky occasionally dotted with small clouds, and this morning we had a magnificent sunrise over a huge black cloud with Safran just a few miles from us. It was glorious!"
"Hellooooooo Kitooooooo!"
Radio contact, in the early afternoon, with the pupils of Rabat in Morocco, Le Havre and Paris was just as easy going. "Morocco is my second country. I am always given a good welcome there. I might stop there on my way back", and said Kito, who has already moored Groupe Bel twice in Tangiers, where one of the Bel group subsidiaries is located. The loyal supporters and cheese lovers in shorts had prepared the radio meeting well. They have clearly been following the Transat Jacques Vabre closely: "Have you spoken with Marc Guillemot and Yann Eliès (on board Safran, which sailed alongside Groupe Bel yesterday)? What’s the mood on board with Yann Régniau like? Have you, encountered any sea mammals? What is your maximum speed?" Voices are sometimes thin, often confident, and you can imagine children with a head full of dreams!
The skipper of Groupe Bel seems equally touched by all this attention and was quick to answer all their questions! "We chatted for a while with Safran . There were only a few kilometers between the two boats and we were in sight of them. It is strange to meet at the same place after seven days of racing in the Atlantic. They have now gone a little further south, however we are now right beside Maître Jacques (50 foot trimaran)", said the Groupe Bel skipper.
