Groupe Bel, the bow rising well above the waves, is gliding towards Costa Rica. The sea has settled down for once and we're racing along under gennaker and full mainsail at 20 knots. Not even a cloud to intrude on this moment of pure joy and perfect balance. The sky is clear and the stars countless. Last night at dusk, we made short work of the Burton brothers gaining 70 miles on them in 24 hours, convinced that they had a few problems. We passed 4 miles from them, but we did not succeed in contacting them, either by VHF or telephone. They must have been very disappointed that we snatched this hard-won fifth place from them so easily. However, it's not over yet, either for them, for us, or anyone else. The end of the race looks as though it will be rather difficult.
